Good Beer for Good Times

Temperatures are warming up and the daffodils are blooming: it’s springtime in Southeastern NC. And you know the minute that warm weather starts to hit the Home Place, it’s a great time to get out and enjoy an ice cold beer.

With a great selection of locally sourced craft breweries on this side of the Cape Fear River, Southport has got you covered. Whether you enjoy trendy flavors, waterfront views, or singing hymns at your local watering hole, check out these four breweries to let the good times roll.

1. Southport Tap and Cellar

Just a stone’s throw from the Home Place of Southport, this taphouse and beer shop does the work for you: hunting down the best brews and ciders from around North Carolina for you to enjoy. And thank goodness they are open every day.

Owners Dewayne and Brittany have been serving up unique and independent craft beer with undeniably awesome names since moving here in 2017. Try out a rich and smooth Blonde Vanilla Latte from the town of Southern Pines, NC or a malty Underminer from Wilmington, NC. You won’t be disappointed.

2. The Grape & Ale

“Our vision for The Grape & Ale is to become Brunswick County’s destination for Fine Wines and Ales,” and what more do you need, really? The Grape & Ale seeks out creative brews from around the world with weekly sample tastings to help you find the perfect drink for your palate.

Customers can enjoy glasses of wine and beer on tap at the store or shop the collection to enjoy at home. The store also offers a wine and beer club which includes a monthly shipment of new drinks to try and great savings.

3. Lonerider at Oak Island

If you want nationally recognized, award-winning NC beer on the banks of the intercoastal, whatever you do, don’t leave town.

Lonerider opened their first western-themed location in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2009 but it turns out that the outlaws were in high demand. Now with four locations across NC including Oak Island, Lonerider serves up playful craft beers such as Shotgun Betty (Hefeweizen Ale) and Hoppy Ki Yay (American Ipa).

Their Oak Island “hideout” has a short but sweet menu: burgers, fish and chips, and other bar fare to enjoy while you soak in the views and the brews.

Proprietor and Head Brewer, Michael Bartlett(“Mike the Brewer”) is an epic homebrewer turned professional with approximately 35 yrs experience under his belt having started brewing in 1988.
