While summer is one of our favorite seasons prime for boating, beaching and all of the outdoor adventures that the Coastal Carolinas are known for, fall holds a special place in our hearts here on the coast. In Southport, North Carolina, we still experience four seasons, so temperatures get a touch cooler, and the leaves still change colors during Autumn. The season of fall is associated with what we lovingly refer to as “locals’ summer” when the beaches are less crowded, and the temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy a day on the sand. Fall is also known for being the perfect time for fishing, certain delicacies are in season (oyster roast anyone!?) and our area has plenty of activities and things to do. Check out some of our favorite fall activities to enjoy in and around Southport.
Southport Fall Concert Series – Thursdays in the Park
Organized at Franklin Square Park, enjoy a line-up of musicians from August through November every Thursday. Local favorites include melodies from The Reflections Band, Lockwood River Band and more. Concerts are free to attend and draw a great crowd that’s sure to be a fantastic time. Each concert is sponsored by a local business and food trucks are often on site with tasty bites for your enjoyment. Music genres include rock, blue grass, country and more (See the full line-up here). So grab your beach chair and bring your family over to the park for a great time!
Riverfest
Happening just a short drive from Southport in Downtown Wilmington, NC, the annual Riverfest draws a great crowd of locals and visitors alike for this all-encompassing event. Riverfest celebrates life by the water and offers something for everyone to enjoy. At Riverfest you’ll find a street fair downtown with local vendors and delicious food. There are also activities for the kids, concerts to enjoy, and a firework show to wrap up the event.
Happening the weekend of October 7-8, you don’t want to miss this local favorite!
Oyster Festival
Calling all seafood lovers, the 42nd Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival is happening in Ocean Isle Beach on October 22-23! Enjoy delicious food from local vendors, including non-seafood items such as barbeque, funnel cakes, burgers and more! Of course, seafood will be available in abundance as well. The weekend will be full of live music from bands including Band of Oz, Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot, and Chocolate Chip and Company. For those with a competitive spirit, there are a series of competitions as well! Take part in an Oyster Shucking Competition or Oyster Eating Competition, and local restaurants will compete to see who makes the best Oyster Stew! Plenty of vendors will be at the festival as well with goods including home décor, paintings, clothing, food goods, local services and more.
Southport Wooden Boat Show
An event for water enthusiasts of all ages, The Southport Wooden Boat Show is scheduled for Saturday, November 4th from 10 am to 4 pm. Talented mariners and boat makers gather to show off their wooden boats and share about the history of Southport’s maritime heritage. This fun and educational event allows visitors to stroll the heart of Downtown Southport, view the wooden boats and vote for the “People’s Choice” award for their favorite creation. This event also features local vendors and historical exhibits. This event is free to attend and great for celebrating our beautiful historic town.
