Enjoy Southport Area Beaches Year Round

When thinking of a trip to the beach, often summer comes to mind. With warm temperatures, sunny weather, and kids out of school on vacation, summer is quite an enjoyable time on the coast. However, in North Carolina, our mild weather allows our area beaches to be enjoyed year-round.

Oak Island and Caswell Beach are often frequented by locals and vacationers alike. One of the many perks of being a local on the coast is trips to the beach anytime, including the off season. For some, the cooler months are even the most enjoyable. Often during the fall and winter, the beach is quiet. Without the activity of vacationers, there are less beachgoers to share the sand with. If you are looking for some peace and calm, a visit to the beach this winter may be just what your soul needs!

Seashells can be found easier as well during the winter months. With less foot traffic, you are more likely to find a full sand dollar or come across a shark’s tooth. As the weather stays mild year-round, you can grab your sunglasses and a hat to stroll the beach to see what the ocean has to offer.

The off season is also a great time to go on an adventure with your furry friends. In both Caswell Beach and Oak Island, dogs are welcome year-round on their leash. The cooler months offer designated hours for you to take your dog off the leash during your visit as long as they listen to voice commands.  From October 15- March 15, dogs can visit Oak Island off-leash between the hours of 6 am – 8 pm. Caswell Beach allows unleashed dogs on the beach from October 1 – April 30 from 3 pm – dark. If your furry friend enjoys joining in on your beach trips, the winter months are a great time to take them!

Another perk of the beach in the winter is the seafood selection. Being right on the coast gives Southport, Oak Island and Caswell Beach access to some of the freshest seafood right off the boat! A local favorite in the winter is oysters which are served in many of the local restaurants. Enjoy local seafood at Moore Street Oyster Bar in Southport, or Island Way in Oak Island, and catch a gorgeous sunset. In the Winter, Carolina sunsets tend to be more colorful, painting the skies in beautiful bold colors of oranges and pinks.

Whether you go to walk the beach looking for treasures, or simply go sit on the beach to listen to the waves crash and the sounds of the coastal wildlife, we recommend a visit this winter.
