Change Up the Scenery

Looking for a change of scenery aside from the same old sidewalk to walk your dog? The areas in and around greater Southport, North Carolina, provide some of the most paw-tastic dog-friendly locations to walk or jog with your furry best friend. It’s important to know the leash rules before taking your dog anywhere, and don’t forget your doggy bags!

Bald Head Island

With a 360° view encompassing 14 miles of white sand, Bald Head Island is considered one of the gems of the Cape Fear Region. An island paradise favored by both locals and tourists alike, the beaches here are quiet and provide ample space to stretch your legs and your paws. Dogs are allowed off-leash for much of the year, with the only exception being turtle nesting season. A short ferry ride there, and you’ll be ready to pawty!

Oak Island

Oak Island is a quick drive from the greater Southport area and include beaches Caswell, Yaupon, and Long Beach. Both Oak Island and Caswell beaches were named the top two dog-friendly beaches in North Carolina. If you’re looking for fun under the coastal sun, a stretch of sand and the Atlantic blue, Oak Island beaches are for you. Remember, dogs must be kept leashed year-round on the nearby strands of Oak Island, but don’t let that keep you from this pup-cation!

Salty Dog Park of Oak Island

Another Oak Island favorite, Salty Dog Park has everything you need for pet-friendly fun. There are wide open spaces for games of fetch, trees to provide shade on a sunny day, and no leashes required! Be sure to bring your water bowls and dog treats along with you. It’s all the great fun your fur-friend needs and only a drive from the beach.
